The Pines to Mines Alliance is a partnership between the Tahoe National Forest, Bear Yuba Land Trust, Truckee Trails Foundation, Truckee Donner Land Trust, Gold Country Trails Council, Bicyclists of Nevada County, and Nevada County. Together, they have been working to realize the dream of a long-distance trail connecting both ends of Nevada County with this stunning, adventuresome singletrack.
The Pines to Mines Trail offers a unique opportunity to advance both conservation and recreation in the northern Sierra. Nevada County’s two largest communities—Truckee and Nevada City—lie on opposite sides of the Sierra Nevada, yet are united by a strong outdoor culture. Trail-based recreation plays a vital role in supporting the health, lifestyle, and economy of the region, making this project an investment in both community well-being and sustainable access to the outdoors.
The Pines to Mines Alliance is dedicated to completing a rugged, backcountry trail designed for non-motorized, multiuse travel. The route will offer an immersive experience for hikers, runners, mountain and e-mountain bikers, and equestrians. Existing trails along the route already accommodate these uses and all new segments will be purpose-built to support this range of users with a sustainable design that minimizes long-term maintenance.

After years of dedicated effort to secure a workable alignment, the Truckee Trails Foundation obtained $100,000 in funding from Nevada County in 2021 to carry out essential resource studies under the National Environmental Policy Act. With the alignment finalized and studies complete, the team has started construction on the Missing Link of this epic trail as of Summer 2025.
Once completed, the trail will span approximately 75 to 85 miles, incorporating the well-loved Trout Creek Canyon, Donner Lake Rim, Hole in the Ground, Spaulding Lake, and Pioneer Trails. About 22 miles of new construction will be needed to connect these segments into a seamless route that showcases the county’s finest features—sweeping valley vistas, the Sierra Crest, mature mixed conifer forests, historic towns, and outstanding recreational opportunities.
The opportunity to introduce such a grand attraction—where invigorating challenges meet breathtaking vistas—into Nevada County’s collection of treasures is irresistible. Its sweeping length and dramatic elevation changes will carry trail users through a tapestry of ever-changing landscapes, crafting an experience as varied and vivid as the Sierra itself.

The Pines to Mines Trail will provide exceptional recreational opportunities for a wide range of abilities, welcoming hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and horseback riders seeking a rugged backcountry experience. Whether embarking on easy day hikes or multi-day pack trips, every user will encounter captivating terrain, breathtaking vistas, and diverse local flora and wildlife. With inviting restaurants and breweries waiting at both ends of the trail, adventurers can enjoy a challenging outdoor experience complemented by well-deserved rewards.
The total cost to complete the trail is estimated at $2 million, divided across eight distinct "missing link" sections. Construction began in summer 2025 on the Long Ridge section and will continue in phases as additional funding is secured.
